Svetlana Makarovič: Looking at People Through Cat’s Eyes | Grand concert promoting the new ŠANSONI book and album collection

She likes to say she is not fond of acting. If yes, then in theatre, maybe a fox. This time she will not be acting. Well, a little, of course.

On Saturday 23 May at 9 pm, Kino Šiška will be hosting a one-off experience – Svetlana Makarovič with guests presenting a unique concert to celebrate her collection of auteur chansons, which will be released in printed and recorded form on the very same day on Sanje Publishing. This great project aims at reviving her music works to reveal to the Slovenian public a new and maybe less known side to Svetlana Makarovič.

At the concert, Svetlana will sing four chansons herself, and the rest will be tackled by her guests: the actress who already made a recital of her chansons a few years ago – Janja Majzelj, a top pianist and Svetlana’s collaborator with previous albums – Joži Šalej, two women with magic vocals and vocals with magic women – Aphra Tesla and Višnja Fičor, an excellent Slovenian puppeteer and musician – Matija Solce, Svetlana’s long-time friend and actress – Ljerka Belak, actor Ivan Rupnik, poet and theatrical Andrej Rozman – Roza. Instrumentations will be provided by brilliant virtuosos Klemen Bračko (violin), Blaž Celarc (percussion) and Nino de Gleria (double bass).

The evening will be dedicated to chansons from albums created by the author in the period between 1984 and 1999: Nočni šansoni (1984), Dajdamski portreti (1985), Večerni šansoni (1990) and Namesto rož (1999). Makarovič has contributed all the compositions, vocals and piano performances. It has to be stressed that all albums have been remastered and restored from original matrixes, which promises top-quality sound.

The concert will be split into two parts, with a total number of 37 songs being sung by Svetlana and her guests. Part one (20 songs) will be dedicated to ballads, permeated with the lyricism, particular language and metaphors of Svetlana Makarovič, who is always ready to scratch at pain and brush all open wounds with vinegar. Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the unforgettable Teci, punčka, teci (Janja Majzelj), Uspavanka bolečini (Višnja Fičor) and Dež (Janja Majzelj), to name just a few.

Part Two will be more light-hearted and teasing, bringing the part of Makarovič’ repertoire that draws from the archetypes of the Slovenian nation. They are so genuine that, obvious prickles aside, they could easily be considered folk songs because of bouncy rhyme and rhythm. Slinar, Primož and Ojoj, gospa are just a few examples, whereas the legendary Trobec is also making it to the stage. In a chanson, that is.

Hosted in its entirety by Svetlana Makarovič, the concert promises to be of epic contents, while its proportions will not be negligible either.
Šansoni book and album collection will be available exclusively for the very first time in Kino Šiška.

Organised by Sanje Publishing and Kino Šiška.
