The exhibition programme of the Stripolisfest comic strip festival in DobraVaga will feature young French drawer and illustrator Delphine Vaute. She will showcase a selection of original drawings and illustrations from her unique picture book for adults Yvonne, l’enfant château, which was published in Slovenia last year by VigeVageKnjige and which focuses on children and their world.

Delphine Vaute’s poetic world, thickly interwoven with delicate metaphors, is full of wondrous, spooky hybrids of children’s bodies and imagery from the plant and animal kingdom – somewhat degenerate creatures that are both familiar and wild. The content is open to numerous interpretations, probably sharing at least a pronounced feeling of menacing scariness. The author is inspired by images from natural museums, entomological sketches and the dark world of Joel-Peter Witkin, among other things. She draws on inspiration from nature’s images and childhood memories. This world, at once both breathtakingly fragile and unstoppably mighty, is sunk into the imaginary, with the author describing Yvonne as a type of Alice who decides to remain in her fantasy world instead of facing reality.

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a discussion with the author, moderated by Anja Golob. During the festival, Delphine Vaute will also lead a drawing workshop on the topic of children’s memories and storytelling in images, which will be held on Saturday, 8th October, at DobraVaga.

DELPHINE VAUTE (1978) is a French drawer and illustrator. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Angers, then continued her art history studies in Nantes, where she lives and works. Her work constantly shifts between the real and the imaginary, with her drawings appearing innocent at first glance, almost naïve, but characteristically building on details that capture one’s attention, revealing and evolving the image.
Yvonne, l’enfant château is the first of her works to be translated into Slovenian. Before it was published in Slovenia by VigeVageKnjige a year after the original was released, Vaute published four independent works in French.
