Damien Jurado is an American indie rock singer/songwriter from Seattle, Washington. Since 1995, Jurado has been releasing some of the most incredible moody pop records for his hometown label Sub Pop. After four full-lengths, a half-dozen singles and enough critical acclaim to place him squarely at the forefront of important contemporary songwriters. For fans of everyone from Matthew Sweet, Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan and Modest Mouse. Over the years, he has released albums on many labels; today, his primary label is Secretly Canadian.

Damien Jurado’s solo career began during the mid-1990s, releasing lo-fi folk based recordings on his own cassette-only label, Casa Recordings. Gaining a local cult following in Seattle, he was brought to the attention of Sub Pop Records by Sunny Day Real Estate singer Jeremy Enigk. After two 7″ releases (Motorbike and Trampoline) Sub Pop issued his first full album, Waters Ave S in 1997. His second albumRehearsals for Departure, released in 1999, was a relative breakthrough.

Visions of Us on the Land
Providing the ideal entry point for neophytes and an intoxicating aural high for the faithful, Damien Jurado’s new opus extends the hot streak ignited by 2012’s Maraqopa and its 2014 follow-up Brothers and Sisters of the Eternal Son. Visions of Us On The Land completes the tale of an individual who has had to disappear from society in order to discover some universal truths.

Maraqopa the album introduced a character — deliberately unnamed, intended to represent anyone feeling that way — who stumbles upon the titular locale then gets into a car crash… which only frees him further. Jurado notes parallels between his wilderness avatar and Syd Barrett’s exit from public life. Plus a classic episode of The Twilight Zone which ends with the previously active protagonist’s still body, eyes closed, on a hospital table. “Because he’s living out what he thinks is a reality in his unconscious state. But the guy doesn’t even know he’s in a coma! Wouldn’t that be strange, if your death was really you waking up? This is what Maraqopa embodies. But trying to do that musically is really hard. In some ways it’s creating a soundtrack.”

Visions of Us on the Land reviews:
MOJO
Its 17 yearning, numinous essays, with lyrics that are part road trip, part inward odyssey, inhabiting a liminal, sepia-tinted sound world.
Q MAGAZINE
His world-weary vocals are leavened by his winning way with clinging melody and an overpowering sense of impish, but committed adventure.
UNCUT
Dreamy, trippy and filled with elegant hooks, it’s his best yet.
