KATALENA
It’s been four years since their last album, Noči čarovnic, and now Katalena, one of the most important Slovenian bands of recent times, are ready for more. Straddling the line between traditional and urban, as always, the new album Enci benci Katalenci (ask a local for a translation) only at first appears to be aimed at the young and the very young. In fact, it follows the creative principles and impulses that have guided the band over the last decade and a half. This is not simply a collection of children’s songs but a proper album aimed squarely at a grown-up audience. The album will receive its premiere at this year’s Druga Godba. After all, it’s where Katalena’s music feels most at home.

CANZONIERE GRECANICO SALENTINO
More than a decade ago Druga Godba featured an appearance by the group Zoe, which was the festival’s first real foray into the singular variant of Tarantella characteristic of Salento, the most southerly part of Apulia. That wonderful concert certainly seemed to suggest that the musical melding of tradition and the present day might be the best global advertisement for that geographically diverse and impoverished part of Italy. Around since the late 1970s, Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino continue to rise to that challenge, appearing on countless stages over the years, from Womad in Australia via Womex and Sziget to some of the most prominent folk festivals around, including Celtic Connections in Glasgow. CGS play pizzica taranta as it should be played: with fire and a hypnotic passion at the meeting-point of the then and now. Maria Mazzotta’s vocals and Silvia Perrone’s dance, backed by a superb band, will send you effortlessly trance-wards.
