Contemporary performing artist and philosopher Bara Kolenc and visual artist Atej Tutta participated at this year’s German festival Theatertreffen with their piece Metamorphoses 3: Rhetoric, and won the grand prize under the Stueckemarkt programme. Co-festival will feature their work Rhetoric – Private Thoughts. The Rhetoric – Private Thoughts series of performances tackles the institution of justice and legal rhetoric in relation to the measured rhetoric function allocated to an individual within the judiciary apparatus. The performances expose the field of private thoughts as the backside of this function. Investigating the direct and indirect effects of public speech on the stream of (conscious and unconscious) thoughts of an individual, they question the possibility of reverse effects of singularised rhetoric traces on frontal monologic structure of the institution of law. ”

Retorika is a multi-year modular project exploring the field of language and communication. It enters the field through research, consideration as well as artistic articulation of a certain skill that was referred to as “the art of persuasion” by Aristotle. The series of performances Retorika – Private Thoughts problematises the institution of judiciary and juridical rhetoric in relation to the allotted rhetorical function assigned to an individual within the judiciary system. As the flip side of this function, the performance art pieces point out the field of private thoughts. They examine the direct and indirect effects of public speech on an individual’s stream of (conscious and subconscious) thoughts, while at the same time questioning the possibility of the singularised rhetorical traces having a reverse effect on the frontal monological structure of the institution of law.
