The third event in the Design Biotop series relates to the usability of design in solving complex issues within specific environments, such as the public administration. Our guest at the event will be system designer Marc Steinberg, who has been working with public administration representatives over the course of several months to assist them in choosing and defining the contents of challenges the participants will be faced with. Steinberg’s lecture, open to the public, will take place on 20 November at 10 am in Museum of Architecture and Design, Ljubljana.

A design platform, Design Biotop was established to seek intersections between various social levels and to promote the design approach to solving social, political and economic issues. The first event in the series was organised by Tretaroka Association in 2013 in Kino Šiška, hosting four renowned Finnish experts in system design. Based on more than 400 participants and positive feedback from the expert public as well as public sector, we have been able to further develop the platform in the direction of specialised workshops and experiential events intended for specific target groups.

The third event in the Design Biotop series, entitled A Design and Innovation Challenge, explores the usability of design in solving complex issues within specific environments, such as the public administration. The emphasis is on finding a solution in a cross-sectorial cooperation and integration of various approaches.

Design Biotop comprises various approaches to finding systemic solutions based on design thinking as a strategic tool for change. The current Design Biotop will host the renowned Finnish system design expert Marco Steinberg, founder of Finnish organisation for strategic design Snowcone & Haystack, former strategic design manager at the Finnish Innovation Found (Sitra) and professor at Harvard Design School (1999-2009). Taking part in the Design and Innovation Challenge are four ministries and two public agencies (Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Ministry of Public Administration, Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region, Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Economic Development and Technology, and Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy), tutored by Marc Steinberg, who selected and defined the contents of challenges to be explored at the event over a course of several months. Participants from the public administration will be working in groups, where they will be joined by visitors, creatives, businessmen and managers, so that together they can tackle the chosen challenges in a controlled process. The event will conclude with results presentation and a public lecture given by the workshop mentor Marc Steinberg on 20 November in Museum of Architecture and Design.

TRETAROKA is an organisation that was formed by a group of creative individuals. Focusing on socially aware projects, we take them on with responsibility, but also idealism, because social initiative is an important element in preventing uniformity and in promoting diversity. Tretaroka originates in design/art and cultural studies, and is oriented towards integration with other practices. Ever since its formation we have been focusing on forming ties with the international sphere. In recent years we established a successful cooperation with Aalta University, Helsinki, to implement various experimental projects (Independent Biennial, Face2Face, Marmelada, Emotive Window, Design Biotope). Since 2007 we have run the Biennial of Independent Illustration, and since 2013 the Design Biotop platform.
