Self-Portrait is a generative audiovisual image that continuously renders itself.
The painter’s audiovisual brush is guided live, before the audience’s eyes, by pseudo-random algorithms, yet the artist appears absent. The image is in a state of perpetual creation, offering a frame through which time flows. Time does not bleed away into the past, however; rather, it accumulates in memory – that eternal present where an endless play of perspectives unfolds.
“Self-Portrait represents my perception of myself, which is a synthesis of various influences and experiences processed in the dubious circumstances of memory. This conglomerate is malleable and heterogeneous, held together only by a poetic gap in which memories cross-pollinate or merely stand awkwardly side by side. Thus, for example, my experience of spirituality, in which I was reborn from the denial of my own infinity, meets the materialism of neuroscience through the narrow frame of a limited self, reducing that very experience of nirvana to a banal firework of neurons. Yet this firework, which under a microscope looks like a chaotic avalanche of shooting stars in the sky, is supposedly also what governs my mind – ‘reason is 98% unconscious’ (Lakoff, 2013). The turbulent forces of my unconscious, which likewise reside somewhere in the sky and frequently mock the consciousness of a certain ‘me’, agree with this… Given that we are made of stardust, none of this really surprises me.”

Tadej Droljc is a Slovenian artist and creative coder who works at the intersection of sound, image and light. His work received the Lumen Prize Student Award and the Dennis Smalley Scholarship in Electroacoustic Music, and he received the Most Promising Video Artist award at Madatac. His practice-based doctoral research received the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Thesis at the Centre for Research in New Music. He has performed and exhibited at festivals such as Mutek, Sonar, Ars Electronica, Mutek, Paris Biennale NEMO, L.E.V., Brighton Digital Festival, Semibreve, Sonica Glasgow, Lunchmeat, Node etc. As part of his collaboration with Ars Electronica’s Future Lab on the project Immersify, his work is included in the permanent exhibition at Ars Electronica’s Deep Space 8K and has been featured at events like Inter BEE Tokyo, IBC Amsterdam and Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes.
