ŠIŠKA “OPEN” 2020

urban activities and music day

We’re not giving up – the fourth urban activities and music day WILL take place on Trg Prekomorskih Brigad Square! In addition to graffiti artists, urban dancers, DJs, workshops and the Library under the Treetops, the finalists of our Špil Liga band competition will perform on our open-air stage, followed by the unstoppable Pijammies presenting their debut album. Entry is of course free this year as well, and the organizer’s instructions and guidelines will have to be followed throughout the event. In case of rain, the music happening will take place in Katedrala Hall for limited number of visitors, while urban activities in the afternoon will be cancelled.

The traditional Šiška “Open” urban activities and music day will take place on Trg Prekomorskih Brigad Square this year as well, though the measure of the National Institute for Public Health place quotes on this year’s Open and fences around the venue.

We’re preparing Friday’s afternoon activities in cooperation with the various cultural, dance and youth organisations that co-shape the cultural pulse of Šiška and the city of Ljubljana. Graffiti artists will hold a graffiti jam, Urbana Scena a freestyle cypher, Mladi Zmaji Šiška will organise a music production workshop, the GUMB Association will hold creative recycling workshops, and you’ll also be able to relax in the Library under the Treetops.

The concert programme will start with the heavily anticipated showdown between the four finalists of the seventh season of Špil Liga: indie pop duo Shiver River, who draw inspiration from King Krule, Cosmo Pyke and contemporary R&B; persistent punk youths JAJA BOJZ, who’ve racked up an impressive number of gigs and wins at various competitions; alternative rockers DeBeat, who’ve riffed their way all over Slovenia; and Kamnik five-piece Before Time, who create timeless tunes at the crossroads of funk, rock and psychedelia. All of the acts fought their way to the finals with your help during our online Štream series, and now it’s about to get real!

Closing the day’s events will be one of the biggest Slovenian music revelations of the past year, the instrumental septet Pijammies. Simply put, those who experience their free-minded jazz-funk fusion live, become their fans. This extremely efficient approach has already taken the young trained musicians to the MENT Ljubljana festival and our Štream series, and now they’re ready to present their eagerly awaited debut album at Šiška “Open”. The six songs, telling one story, represent the never-ending struggle between creation and destruction both in art and in other parts of life. With the album, the band members began discovering their sound and expression through the strong bonds of friendship, constant improvement and the discovery of new possibilities, drawing on jazz tradition and enhancing it with contemporary sounds. Along with influences from different styles, they win you over with incredibly energetic shows in the manner of Weather Report or Snarky Puppy, and we can’t wait for them to bring that to our square.
