Better Machines for Better Humans: Kate Crawford

Kate has travelled the planet, visiting the sites that reveal the true costs of artificial intelligence as an extractive industry, consuming natural resources, labour and vast quantities of data. In the process, she has also imagined better ways of building and deploying those technical tools in ways that empower people to improve their lives and communities.

Kate Crawford is a writer, composer, producer and a leading scholar on the social implications of artificial intelligence. Her work focuses on large-scale data systems, machine learning and AI in the wider contexts of history, politics, labour and the environment. Her project Anatomy of an AI System with Vladan Joler is now in the permanent collection of MoMA and the V&A Museum in London, and it won the Beazley Design of the Year award in 2019. Her collaboration with artist Trevor Paglen,, won the Ayrton Prize from the British Society for the History of Science. Her most recent book is ATLAS OF AI: Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence.
Kate is a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research New York, a Research Professor of Communication and STS at USC Annenberg, and a Visiting Chair for AI and Justice at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. She is also a Visiting Professor at MIT’s Center for Civic Media and a Senior Fellow at NYU’s Information Law Institute. She sits on the advisory boards of the Information Program at George Soros’ Open Society Foundation, The New Museum’s art and technology incubator NEW INC, and several academic journals including Big Data & Society. She is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Data for Development and holds a co-director role with the Council for Big Data, Ethics, and Society.
