LAUREL

+ Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl

In October, we’ll welcome the rising young singer and guitarist Laurel, whose hypnotic intensity has mesmerised the British indie scene. Her original sound lies between Florence + The Machine and Anna Calvi, with her debut album released via a Ninja Tune subsidiary in August, undoubtedly as one of the hottest releases of the summer. And just a few months later, she’s coming to Šiška. And just a few months later, she’s coming to Šiška! She’ll be joined by the pleasant electronic dream pop and recognisable vocals of Universal Music Group’s new protégés Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl.

When British youngster Laurel emerged from her bedroom studio with the demo version of “Blue Blood” in 2013, she immediately drew the attention of music bloggers. Since then, her path has led straight up – through three excellent EPs, a contract with a subsidiary of the acclaimed Ninja Tune Records, sold out tours around her homeland, praise from Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Spotify and The Guardian, and partnerships with fashion brands such as Burberry, Levi’s and Vans, all the way to her heavily anticipated debut album Dogviolet, released in August 2018.

On the record, the next big name in British indie pop lays bare the bittersweet mania of real love. Her intimately expressive voice and vintage guitar warmth drape the piercing grace of Lana Del Rey and Florence + The Machine in dark nuances that would make Anna Calvi or Austra proud. Her October show might just be one of the last chances to catch her live before she explodes on a global level, so it’s definitely not to be missed.

Zala Kralj & Gašper Šantl first drew the attention of the broader public with their hit song “Valovi”, the Slovenian song of 2017, as affirmed by the Golden Flute music award. His subtle, sensual electronic pop and her charmingly dreamy voice, compared by Mladina to “American dream pop icon Hope Sandoval, just seem made for each other. Since the release of “Valovi”, they’ve made a few more wonderful songs, toured venues all over Slovenia and threw in a fine cover or two. At the time of writing, the latest news is their signing to megalabel Universal Music Group, and they’re promising a new song or two in the lead-up to their concert in Šiška as well.
