Kino Šiška, Ljubljana – September 11th to 21st 2013

Kino Šiška and the Belgrade-based Dis-patch Collective are collaborating once again, this time around the 4th birthday celebration of Šiška, with a program which includes a group exhibition of the contemporary graphic art from Belgrade, as well as the premiere of “Belgrade Live 2012” graffiti film, and a nice party to round it all up.

Exit Through the Glory Hole is now already a series of exhibitions initiated and curated by Relja Bobić, the founder and artistic director of Dis-patch and formerly Belgradeyard Sound System. The premiere edition of the show was presented  in June 2012 at the legendary Neurotitan Gallery in Berlin, while its follow up was a special “home-show” in Belgrade in November last year, at the U10 art space. Initially conceived as a two-part collaborative show of five Belgrade-based artists, Exit Through the Glory Hole is slowly becoming a much-needed, open artistic platform for communication, collaboration and production between the local artists coming from various backgrounds of street art/life, while the arrival of the project to Ljubljana marks this specific moment. In its third edition, the exhibition is presenting as many as seven participating artists, their individual and collaborative works in the beautiful challenging space of Kino Šiška.

The exhibition offers a relevant and peculiar view into some of the most interesting Belgrade-based artists of today, specifically the ones whose work is mostly unfolding completely outside of the “official” system which is usually accompanying the local visual arts scene of Belgrade or Serbia. Although all of the invited artists have a long history of activity within the local “street art” movements and subcultures, one of the main goals of the exhibition is for their work to be seen in a new context, and to offer a chance to the authors to realize site-specific works specially for the occasion and the venue. The artistic values of their individual outputs are since a long time reaching beyond the classical understanding and valuation of the field of “street art”, while the genre itself is not a question of visual style or mannerism for these artists, but a much deeper connection to a specific (sub)culture and choice of a certain “way of life”, individual modality of being involved in the arts as such.

Beside the more than obvious references in the title and subtitle of the show – to the art icon Banksy, the neurotic thinker Slavoj Žižek and certain forms of pornographic production – for the artists themselves each ETGH exhibition is an exit of sorts, a step into new ways of collaborative working and unexpected situations. The artists participating in the exhibition are Fat Kid Beny, TV Doily, Weedzor, EmaEmaEma, Fuck Toys, D.L.T. and FuckNewRave. The exhibition logo was designed by Slang International studio from Berlin.

The opening night on September 11th will also feature the screening of the movie “Belgrade Live  2012” in the main hall of Kino Šiška. Produced by the Fuck Toys-related APD Media from Belgrade, the film focuses on the “graffiti bombing” activities in the city throughout 2012, and showcases the vibrant, vital and many times crazy graffiti scene and street spirit of Belgrade, its main crews and players. Shot, edited and produced in a self-sufficient, no-budget DIY manner by Fuck Toys, the film is a true labor of love and an “ode” to the dedicated writers of Belgrade, which has one of the most active scenes in this part of Europe.

The Kino Šiška birthday celebrations will be rounded up by a party taking place within the exhibition . The focus is, once again – Belgrade. You will have a chance to hear one of the most sought-after electronic musicians, well-known for his legendary long sets at the cult Belgrade club/boat 20/44. Behind the numbers 33-10-3402 is Nenad Marković, young sound designer and producer who will present his unique blend of atmospheric techno and slow, hypnotic dance grooves. His live set will be supported by DJ intro and outro by George Michael Jackson, one of the residents of the Haunted Dancehall parties, which take place each month in collaboration between Dis-patch, Disco Not Disco and 20/44.

The exhibition and the entire program are curated by Relja Bobić and produced as a collaboration between Dis-patch and Kino Šiška. You can check out previous editions of the project at these links:
