Balkan Taksim

+ OjgeN

After entrancing us at MENT in 2020 with their cross of Balkan folk tradition and trip hop atmosphere, Balkan Taksim are returning to Ljubljana with their fresh and seductive debut Disco Telegraf. We’ll warm up with OjgeN, a local instrumental trio of veteran musicians Marko Brdnik, Andraž Mazi and Marjan Stanić.

Balkan Taksim is the brainchild Romanian multi-instrumentalist and artist Sașa-Liviu Stoianovici and electronic producer Alin Zăbrăuțeanu, who set out to bring Balkan psychedelics, tradition and grooves to the wider world. They tackled this in a perhaps somewhat unexpected way – by merging the past and the future, ancient rhythms and modern technologies, through the perfect intersection of folk tunes and traditional instruments with electronic production and bold beats. In doing so, their sincerity, respect and first-hand knowledge of Balkan traditions lets them keep their distance from cheap “insta-fusion” or clichéd approaches. In their elegant electronic psychedelia, we can hear hints of both Anatolian rock of the 1970s and the ominous creep of Massive Attack, both the wildness of the Balkans and the roots of Romania.

The band’s debut Disko Telegraf was released in May last year, and it features a whole bunch of Balkan languages and musical instruments that squeeze colourful grooves out of even the most minimalist elements. The album has won the approval of reputable media such as Songlines and MOJO, so we can’t wait to go on the band’s Balkan trip live.

Before Balkan Taksim, we’ll listen to OjgeN, a local group of experienced musicians Marko Brdnik on synthesizers, Andraž Mazi on electric guitar and Marjan Stanić on drums. A little over two years ago, they released Replika, a demo album of calm, benevolent sounds, and in January last year they turned the heat up with the lively funk of “Swedish Girls”.
