There are few bands that break into the wider musical consciousness so rapidly, and even fewer that do so in a language spoken daily by about as many people as the Prekmurje dialect. Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, better known as Kneecap, have had an insanely successful couple of years. At the start of 2024, few would have bet that the masked Northern Irish trio, rapping in a mix of Irish Gaelic and English, would not only release one of the standout albums of the year (Fine Art – #13 on NME, #29 in The Guardian, #44 on The Line of Best Fit …) but also take the film world by storm with their award-winning biographical film, co-starring Michael Fassbender. They also delivered one of the most talked-about performances at the iconic Glastonbury Festival and count music legends like Noel Gallagher and Pete Doherty among their fans.
Obviously, Kneecap achieved all that and much more. The band, known for their provocative lyrics, powerful performances, and commitment to the ideals of Irish republicanism, had sparked discussions about national identity, language, and politics since the beginning, gaining a whole new level of notoriety with its firm pro-Palestine stance. Alongside groups like Lankum and Fontaines D.C., they stand at the forefront of the modern renaissance of Irish music, and their upcoming new album is one of the most heavily anticipated releases of the year.
