ZINE VITRINE | Katarina Babič Derenda: Point of Respawn

exhibition

free entry

The artist presents a zine in which collages, composed of layered video game screenshots, embody the sense of overload that comes with using oversaturated social media, which constantly demand attention and lure us into a multi-user virtual dimension.

Through remixing, cutting, and reassembling images from fantasy worlds, he creates a visual experience that both imitates and questions the fast pace of contemporary digital everyday life. The collages function as generative processes, in which the transformation of existing images continually produces new variations and meanings.

Katarina Babič Derenda (2001) is a young queer Slovenian artist. In September 2024, he completed his undergraduate studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana. His work is currently built around digital collages, video, and sculpture, and questions normative modes of embodiment and foregrounds neurodivergent well-being as a radical act. His visual works are rooted in post-internet aesthetics, and through humour, appropriation, and collage, he reuses and transforms the digital detritus of video games. Alongside producing visual works, he engages with non-queer theory – both by reading existing thought and by developing his own hypotheses and experiences. Many of his works are therefore confessional while also attempting to capture the sense of oversaturated existence in the present moment, specifically the experiences of marginalised people in a post-capitalist world.
