The works of French comic artist Simon Ecary, this year’s artist-in-residence, merge the aesthetics of classic comics and picture books with the subversiveness of independent production and art brut.
His comics are defined by simple line drawings, flat and caricatured figures, dynamic framing, and striking colour contrasts, which he uses to construct dreamy, playful, and occasionally bizarre worlds. The exhibition offers an insight into his creative practice, featuring original pages from his latest comic Tornadino, l’égoïsme tardif, as well as a selection of illustrations.
Simon Ecary (1997) is a French comic artist and illustrator, and this year’s resident of the international comics programme in Ljubljana. He lives and works in Angoulême, where he studied at the renowned ÉESI (École Européenne Supérieure de l’Image) school for comics and visual arts. His comics and illustrations have been published in zines, magazines, and comic anthologies such as Nicole and BubbleGum. He is currently completing his comic album Tornadino, l’égoïsme tardif, which will be released in early 2026 by the acclaimed French independent publisher Cornélius.
The exhibition is part of the comics residency exchange between the UNESCO Cities of Literature Ljubljana and Angoulême.
