In the workshop, led by acclaimed Finnish comic artist and activist Sanna Hukkanen, we will explore how comics can be used as an effective tool for storytelling, raising awareness of social issues, and creating change within communities.
The workshop is aimed at artists, students, educators, youth and social workers, activists, and anyone interested in comic creation and the use of comics when working with diverse social groups, regardless of prior experience.
After an introductory presentation on the basics of comic storytelling and the possibilities offered by the medium, participants will create their own short comic with a socially conscious theme. They will also receive practical tips and materials for independently organising comic workshops for different audiences. No prior drawing experience is required. Comics are for everyone!
Sanna Hukkanen is a Finnish comic artist who has been organising and leading comic workshops for over 20 years. She is a long-standing member of the NGO World Comics Finland, which uses comics to empower marginalised communities and promote social change around the world. She has led workshops for minority groups, asylum seekers, and NGOs working with vulnerable communities in Finland, Estonia, Russia, the Nordic countries, and Tanzania. In 2023, her comic In the Shelter of Trees, created in collaboration with anthropologist Inkeri Aula, was published in Slovenian by Aristej Publishing.
The workshop will be held in English. Participation is free, but spaces are limited. Please bring your own pens and pencils.
