ZINE VITRINE I Katarina Kolenc: Heatwave

exhibition

Heatwave consists of a series of photos of summer events on the Slovenian coast and the island of Krk.

The author observes the events on the beach from a distance. She understands the day-long sunbathing, the masses on the shore and the soaking in the sea as a reflection of today’s consumerist, mainstream society. The photos, which look nostalgic and homely due to the colours and motifs, are simultaneously cheeky, aesthetic, but nevertheless critical. Between the lines and going by the title, the series touches on, or might hint at, the current and threatening topic of global warming, which also stems from the general human consumerist mentality conditioned by capitalism.

Katarina Kolenc (1994) graduated in photography from the Faculty of Applied Sciences in Ljubljana. In her photography work, she focuses on commercial and artistic photography. She regularly photographs dance events, especially swing evenings and festivals in Slovenia and abroad. In addition to working with various dance schools in Slovenia, she regularly photographs for Gallery Y, the Vevče Wind Orchestra, the Lesbian Quarter festival, and others. Her own projects originate in the documentary recording of everyday moments and the tiny peculiarities of her surroundings, which she later develops in the form of documentary and conceptual stories. The stories sometimes express her fondness for historical artistic movements. Most of the time, this is spontaneous street photography with an emphasis on human experiences and humorous criticism of modern society.
