YĪN YĪN

+ Planet Opal

On their first visit to Šiška, the Dutch dance mystics captivated us with their fat funk, disco nostalgia and psychedelic joyriding. Two years later, they return with a brand-new record, the Japanese-inspired Mount Matsu, released on the renowned Glitterbeat label.

FOR FANS OF: Altin Gün, Kikagaku Moyo, Khruangbin …

Mount Matsu is an album deeply influenced by both cosmic sound waves and the rich musical culture of Japan. The record stands out as Yīn Yīn’s first truly democratically produced project, with all four band members contributing to the work.  It incorporates a distinct blend of instruments, including vintage synthesizers and a traditional Chinese zither, to produce melodies that transport the listener into a parallel realm. The album, largely instrumental, offers an expansive canvas for listeners’ imaginations, inspired by the collaborative journey likened to climbing the titular mountain. Released by the acclaimed Glitterbeat Records, it promises a rich experience for those fond of warm, psychedelic disco, fat global funk, electronics, and tribal sounds.

In the construction of their rainbow funk, kaleidoscopic music cosmopolitans Yīn Yīn don’t hesitate in reaching for basically anything that such a company of musical dreamers can come up with. Their well-received debut The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers placed them somewhere halfway between the Netherlands and Southeast Asia on the music map, and their tours got crowds across Europe to move, including at festivals such as Eurosonic Noorderslag and Le Guess Who?. Their second album, also released by Glitterbeat, brought the to Šiška in 2022 for the first time, and the overwhelming response at the time led to their heavily anticipated return.

We’ll warm up for Yīn Yīn with the chromatic sounds and pulsating grooves of Planet Opal. The Italian duo intertwines the dance-punk and post-disco scenes of New York with kraut rock and electro using vocals, synths, and drums. They’ve played a run of high-profile festival shows, including MENT Ljubljana, Mondo Festival in New York, and Transmusicales in Rennes, as well as more intimate gigs at venues such as Ljubljana’s Zorica and support slots for the likes of Pendulum, Peter Hook, and Calibro 35.
