Bernie Mallinger – violin
Sophie Abraham – cello
Cynthia Liao – viola
Igmar Jenner – violin
The first evening will feature radio.string.quartet – a dynamic Vienna-based ensemble for whom genre boundaries simply don’t apply. Made up of musicians from the Netherlands, Taiwan, Germany, and Austria, they’ve been pushing beyond the limits of the traditional string quartet with virtuosity and daring since 2004. Critics have likened them to pioneering groups such as Kronos Quartet and Turtle Island Quartet.
At Šiška, they will present B:A:C:H ● like waters, a piece written by their violinist Bernie Mallinger during the quiet of the 2020 lockdown. With great sensitivity, he has carried Bach’s Sonata for Solo Violin in G minor into the 21st century, enriching it with the human voice and electronics. The piece is part of the group’s “quadrilogy” project, in which they explore the four elements – earth, fire, air, and water – each inspiring its own dedicated project.
In 2020, they released the first instalment, Erd (Earth), created in collaboration with Austrian singer and composer Roland Neuwirth. In 2022, they followed with the water-themed B:A:C:H ● like waters, an immersive audiovisual journey demanding the complete dedication of all four musicians. Cellist Sophie Abraham recalls the moment they first played the final movement (Presto): “It was intense. I was exhausted, but I experienced enlightenment, a kind of revelation.”
The concert promises an abundance of sound and vision – music in dialogue with light, space, and a finely crafted dramaturgy.
Šiška is pushing the boundaries of classical – in sound, space, and experience.
(Un)Classical. A new format. A new experience.
This autumn at Kino Šiška, we’re opening a new chapter – the (Un)Classical concert series, which brings classical music into an environment where electricity has so far reigned supreme: Katedrala Hall, Kino Šiška’s main stage.
Over four thematically curated evenings, we’ll give contemporary classical music a space that goes beyond the usual confines of silent halls with velvet chairs. The programmes will be thoughtfully and dramaturgically shaped, enriched with lighting design, visual ambience, and performative layers that engage the listener in a holistic way – not only through the ear, but also through the eye and the sense of space.
(Un)Classical is a bridge between genres, generations, and spaces. For classical audiences, the venue will be a surprise; for Šiška’s regular visitors, the sound will be unexpected; but for all, there will be a shared desire for excellence, fresh interpretation, and a profound experience of music today.
