This year’s visual identity for the Fabula Festival, held under the slogan (co)responsible, has been created by the artist žANŽAN. The solo exhibition reveals the process behind the festival’s imagery, from the earliest stages of the working process, reflections, and associations to the final visuals.
Video forms the foundation of the artist’s practice, not as a finished medium but as raw material. Through physical interventions, such as covering the lens with plastic, water, or directed studio light, he creates images that contain “errors”, ruptures, and disturbances from the moment of capture. Rather than being removed, these elements become starting points for further work. A key part of the process takes place in post-production, where digital editing is not merely technical processing but a space of selection, emphasis, and transformation. It is here that the direction of the project begins to emerge: the visual material opens up, fragments, and is reassembled until it establishes its own internal logic.
The conceptual starting point of the work is the festival slogan itself, understood as a call for both individual and collective, proactive awareness. The notion of (co)responsibility unfolds as a duality, where responsibility can be assigned to an actor as personal and inherent, or as shared and distributed. This nuance between the individual and the collective guides the artist’s image-making. In the final visuals, the figure initially remains invisible, concealed and dispersed, only coming together when the viewer distances themselves from the work. By presenting the process with all its beginnings and final outcomes, the exhibition invites close engagement with the making of the festival’s visual identity.
Žan Gašperič works under his own brand žANŽAN. At the centre of his practice is himself as subject and author, building a cohesive whole through clothing, design, visual imagery, and music. He lives in Helsinki, where he is completing a master’s degree at Uniarts, and previously graduated summa cum laude in photography from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, receiving the academy’s award for his work. He believes in the importance of details and in a vegan future.
