In her latest series of paintings, Lenča Malec constructs a digital dreamhouse where the aesthetics of Barbie, Y2K glamour, and personal reflections on the body and the roles women occupy in society intertwine.
Through portrayals of a modern-day Barbie engaged in everyday activities, set against shiny and plastic digital backdrops, she explores how femininity is constructed through the lens of societal expectations.
Lenča Malec (1997) is a master’s student in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, where she also completed her undergraduate studies. Her work addresses the elusive relationship between eroticism and pornography, as well as her own position within a patriarchal society – one whose symptom is the internalised operation of the male gaze in various aspects of perceiving the opposite sex. Her creative practice spans painting, printmaking, ceramics, and digital collage.
