ARTIST PER MONTH: Eva Bevec: Keys, Water, Phone (and Everyone I Love)

exhibition

free entry

In 2020, during a chaotic period of her life, the artist started going for daily walks in order to improve her mental health. To keep herself motivated, she documented the strange, funny and banal phenomena she encountered while walking – as a kind of game, an exercise in looking.

The exercise became a methodology and grew from walks (Keys, Water, Phone) into recording similarly absurd moments during everyday chores and socializing (and Everyone I Love), almost unconsciously growing into an artistic practice. Over the years, the format of Instagram Stories served as its exhibition space at the comfortable intersection of cringe and endearing, intimate and public, evil-corporate and enticingly accessible – but always strictly transitory. What happens if she seals the 24-hour ephemera between sheets of paper, collecting them in a pile where they stay forever? (Maybe she can just watch (Keys, Water?) – and leave her phone at home.)

Eva Bevec (1998) is a designer, visual artist and photographer who lives and works in Ljubljana. She completed her bachelor’s degree in visual communication design with honors at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, and she completed her master’s degree in information design with honors at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. She has participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad (Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, DobraVaga and the Brumen Biennial in Ljubljana, Layer House in Kranj). For her work, she received the student Prešeren Award and the Brumen Award, and in 2024 she became a member of the European photography platform Futures. In her artistic and design practice, Eva uses the methods of essay film, documentary photography and archiving to question seemingly everyday and banal aspects of her surroundings, in which she reveals deeper social, political, as well as aesthetic issues, patterns and implications through inquisitive and critical observation.
