TINTA 2022 | KUŠ!: BACK TO NATURE

group exhibition

Isn’t nature just utterly beautiful? Sometimes, we feel this urge to get “back to nature”, but mostly we stand with our backs to it. Let’s face it: we are destroying the natural world with every step. Literally. At our current pace, the apocalypse seems unavoidable. But is it? It might already be too late to change, but it’s definitely inevitable if we don’t even try.

The exhibition, titled after the eponymous anthology of the Latvian independent comics publisher kuš!, celebrates nature in its many forms, showcasing works by Latvian artists Rebeka Lukošus, Oskars Pavlovskis, Lote Vilma, Agate Lielpētere, Ingrīda Pičukāne and Mārtiņš Zutis, as well as Mark Antonius Puhkan (Estonia), Ciara Quilty-Harper (UK/Ireland), Theo Ellsworth (USA) and Harukichi (Japan).

kuš! is a tiny independent comics publisher from Latvia, founded in Riga in 2007. This year, it is celebrating 15th anniversary. It is best known for its signature pocket-sized anthologies with an eclectic and colourful selection of short comics by Latvian and international artists, with each issue centred around a certain theme. Right from the start, the mission of kuš! is to popularize comics in a country where this medium was practically non-existent and to promote Latvian comics abroad. kuš! doesn’t just publish comic books, it also organizes exhibitions, workshops, residencies, comic jams and other comics-related events. It also travels to international comics festivals and fairs to spread the Latvian comic fever.
