TIMBER TIMBRE

+ Dino Brandão

The Canadian phenomenon Timber Timbre, whose velvety melancholy earned a place not only in the hearts of listeners, but also in some of the best TV series of all time, is returning to Šiška. With a refreshed line-up, the band will present their latest album Lovage, an enthralling masterpiece of diverse influences.

FOR FANS OF: Leonard Cohen, Tindersticks, Kurt Vile …

For nearly two decades ten years, Taylor Kirk’s project Timber Timbre has explored the shadowy corners of folk and rock, looking at them through a different lens with each new record, whether it’s 1950s doo wop, 1960s folk or 1970s country. Regardless of the decade the group finds itself in, the common threads of its musical expression are a confident sound, Kirk’s sultry vocals, and dark sensibilities. The band’s mastery of cinematic soundscapes has also led to its songs being included in the soundtrack of noted series such as Breaking Bad and The Good Wife.

Since releasing and extensively touring 2017’s Sincerely, Future Pollution, including a visit to Šiška, the band quietly released a pair of cassette-only Eps before forging ahead with a new full-length in October. Lovage, the most accomplished and engrossing Timber Timbre album to date, is a bona fide masterpiece, as Kirk manages to combine disparate influences that would otherwise seem mutually incompatible. Reconciling Brian Wilson’s rich sonic palette with the amused melancholy of Leonard Cohen, Kirk also revisits Sun Ra, Alice Coltrane, and Italian singers such as Pino Daniele and Paolo Conte, which might explain the cinematic lightness of the new album. We’ll experience it live in April as Timber Timbre returns to Kino Šiška with a new line-up.

Dino Brandão, a Swiss musician of Angolan origin, successfully follows Aristotle’s principle in the whole of his work being greater than the sum of its parts. Brandão is impossible to narrow down or limit, as he reaches for various experiences, instruments and influences from all corners of the world in his music, from African djembes to sharp violin strings or dreamy guitar strums, his vocals – sometimes charming, other times harsh, but always sincerely outspoken – flowing around and through the instrumentation. We could hear the fascinating artist in various contexts, from street performances to the Montreaux Jazz Festival or with Sophie Hunger. In Šiška he’ll warm us up for Timber Timbre.

Tickets on sale on Thursday, NOV 23 online and at Eventim outlets.
