The feature-length documentary The Way Home is a portrait of the outstanding Slovenian basketball player Jure Zdovc, who played for the Yugoslav team in the middle of the independence war for Slovenia at the European Championship in Rome in 1991. It was then that he had to decide: will he remain part of the Yugoslav national team or will he give up the gold medal?
He tells the story of this life-altering decision, which left its mark on his career, together with former journalist and TV Slovenia commentator Miha Žibrat, with whom he sets down memory lane. Together they visit his former teammates from Rome, Žarko Paspalj, Dino Rađa and Toni Kukoč, and their coach Dušan Ivković in one of his last interviews before his death. Produced by the Art 7 Video studio, the feature-length documentary road movie was written by screenwriter and director Aleš Žemlja in co-production with RTV Slovenia and with the financial support of the Slovenian Film Centre. Zmago Sagadin, Božidar Maljković, Janez Drvarič, Peter Vilfan, friends, relatives and others illuminate Jure’s thorny sports path from his young age to admission to the FIBA Hall of Fame. Around the most difficult decision in his career, the crew also used sequences where renowned Slovenian actors Luka Bokšan and Jure Lajovic play the roles of Jure and Miha. The film is in Slovenian.
