For nearly four decades, Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums) and Lloyd Swanton (double bass) have been refining a musical language entirely their own. Every Necks performance is a singular event: fully improvised, shaped by the space itself, and impossible to repeat. Those who remember their earlier appearances at Šiška will know there is no such thing as déjà vu here – only gradual shifts, deep grooves and hypnotic momentum that builds with orchestral breadth from the sparsest of elements. Built on absolute mutual trust and an almost telepathic connection, their music draws listeners in slowly, rewarding attention while never demanding it, and has earned the trio a reputation as one of the most singular and influential bands of our time.
Disquiet, their twentieth studio album and a marker of the band’s 39th year together, stretches this philosophy further than ever before. Spanning three discs and more than three hours, the record presents four meticulously sculpted pieces that expand and dissolve with microscopic focus, blurring ideas of structure, sequence and even listening order. There is no prescribed beginning or end – only an open field of sound in which piano, double bass and drums mutate into something vast and quietly overwhelming.
