Barely 19 years old, Tanita Tikaram became an international success with her 1988 debut album, Ancient Heart, which featured the smash hit singles “Twist in My Sobriety” and “Good Tradition.” Selling over four million copies worldwide and establishing Tikaram as a prominent voice in the late 1980s music scene, Ancient Hearts proved to be the beginning of a lengthy, ever-evolving artistic career, with exploring various musical styles and collaborating with a range of musicians. Her subsequent albums, including The Sweet Keeper (1990), Lovers in the City (1995), and Closer to the People (2016), showcase her versatility and commitment to musical exploration.
Tikaram’s music is characterized by her deep, soulful voice and introspective lyrics, drawing comparisons to artists such as Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. Her ability to blend genres seamlessly has earned her a dedicated following and a respected place in the music industry.
In 2025, Tikaram is gearing up to release her latest album, LIAR (Love Isn’t a Right), marking a return to the themes and sounds that defined her early work. The long-awaited new album reveals the emotional and societal differences between the woman Tanita was to the woman she is today, taking in four decades of life experience. It is an album of haunting beauty and exquisite musicianship underplaying her unique voice that tells a masterful story of emotional, political and personal truths.
