STILL CORNERS

+ Jakob Kobal

Dreamy synth pop pair Still Corners, the former Sub Pop protégés who racked up tens of millions of YouTube views with hits such as “The Trip” and “Fireflies”, are finally coming to Slovenia. We can look forward to another evening of luscious sounds, inspired by the heat of the American West and reminiscent of Cigarettes After Sex’s sold-out gig in 2017. We’ll warm up with the Mediterranean breeze of young Slovenian singer-songwriter Jakob Kobal.

The formation of Still Corners is the result of a random meeting between Greg Hughes and Tessa Murray at a London train station in 2009. Their very first – instantly sold-out – singles drew the attention of the famous Sub Pop Records. Their successful debut Creatures of an Hour was followed by Strange Pleasures, which firmly established the duo’s blend of Vangelis’s boldness, Ennio Morricone‘s cinematic soundscapes and the glamorous synth pop of the 1980s. The breakthrough album also included the hits “The Trip” and “Fireflies”, named Best New Track by Pitchfork.

Their third album Dead Blue, published via the band’s own Wrecking Light Records, stunned listeners again and made it to the top of The Line of Best Fit‘s list of the best dream pop albums of 2016. The pair continued their musical journey last year with Slow Air, suffusing their characteristic atmospherics with the dry heat of Texas, Arizona, California and other parts of the American West. The outcome is, as stated by The Skinny, “an escapist dream which can only offer more to the imagination with every listen”. At Šiška in May!

Idrija native Jakob Kobal drew attention to himself at only 22 years old with the exceptional single “Cloudless Skies”, which quickly paved the way to acclaimed showcase festivals such as MENT Ljubljana, Eurosonic Noorderslag and Indirekt, and was also one of the most played songs of 2016 on Slovenian radio Val 202. That same year he made it onto the European Border Breakers Chart, which presents the most promising young musicians from all over Europe. His music floats among calm, relaxed sounds that bring to mind carefree summer evenings, and frothy waves in the middle of the ocean, ruled by chaotic, mystic rhythms and melodies.
