Spilt Ink | Homage to Ivo Štandeker

roundtable discussion

Towards the end of the 1980s, a tall and slender young man with dishevelled hair, adorned with big nerdy glasses, worked for the Mladina magazine.

As a true a comic book enthusiast, he began to invite various comics artists, who were already stirring the underground waters of the Yugoslav comics scene, to collaborate: Tomaž Lavrič, Zoran Smiljanić and Dušan Kastelic, who became the bearers of change and the driving force of Slovenian comics in the 1990s. Unfortunately, Štandeker did not live to see the true impact, which only became apparent later and had a strong influence on the further development of modern Slovenian comics. At the age of just thirty, he was hit by a piece of a grenade in the Dobrinja settlement while reporting on the Serbian siege of Sarajevo, dying few hours later in a makeshift hospital in Pale. On June 16, exactly thirty years will have passed since his death.

At Spilt Ink, we will pay tribute to the anniversary with a roundtable discussion on the beginnings of Mladina’s comics circles, which to this day cultivate a culture of printing, presenting and reviewing Slovenian comics in this magazine. We will be joined by some of Štandeker’s former comics colleagues and editors. The discussion will be moderated by Pia Nikolič.

Free entry.
