Špil Liga is once again joining forces with the Croatian high school festival Superval for an evening of promising music from both sides of the border. This time around, we’ll be visited by the winners of Špil Liga’s 7th season, Before Time, with their new record, along with art rockers Fargo and the finalist of the 12th season of Špil Liga, Iza Napotnik.
Hailing from Kamnik, Before Time first dominated the pandemic-era Špil Liga in 2020 and later Šourock with their indie rock, infused with a touch of psychedelia and untamed stylistic shifts. Drawing from the intersection of diverse arts and worldviews, the members create whatever they feel, while persistently developing and experimenting with their creative vision. Upon their return to Šiška, they’ll present the successor to their 2023 debut OMNI, Vse Kar Smo, whose acoustic version recently wowed the Cankarjev Dom crowd.
The young Zagreb-based five-piece Fargo explores the intersection of indie and art rock in the manner of Black Country, New Road, adding their mark with strong guitar riffs and the raw energy of Midwestern emo bands such as American Football or Sunny Day Real Estate. While incorporating sax-led meanders and progressive time signature into their advanced songwriting, their lyrics have a way of bringing a smile to listeners’ faces, and their Superval shows were distinguished by an honest, relaxed atmosphere and infectious melodies. They released their first EP last year.
Young Slovenian singer-songwriter Iza Napotnik presents the most authentic version of herself on stage, guitar in hand. She intertwines the dissonant, shifting melodies of confessions written in her teenage bedroom with intimate emotions and a mature understanding of the world around her. With a recent uptick in concert activity, including a performance on Radio Študent and opening for Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys, she’s currently preparing the terrain for her upcoming debut album.
