SONICA, in collaboration with SHAPE+ Platform and PiNA, invites you to a unique concert dedicated to spatial sound at the intersection of modern classical, experimental music, drone and sound.

Performances include the music of legendary French composer Eliane Radigue performed by percussionist Enrico Malatesta, the spatial and immersive music of the French composer Eva Aboulkheir, the electroacoustic work of Slovenian sound artist beeblip, and the analogue modular soundscapes of the local duo DUF x LOWLANDER. The experience will be enhanced by a 20-channel sound sculpture by DodekaOTTO from HEKA in Koper.

ENRICO MALATESTA (SHAPE+, IT)

Enrico Malatesta is an Italian percussionist and sound researcher active in the fields of experimental music, sound-territory exploration and performance; his practice explores the relations between sound, space, and body, the vitality of materials and the morphology of surfaces, with particular attention to percussive acts and touch-based listening. Since 2007, Enrico Malatesta has presented his works on tours across Europe, Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Japan, the UK, USA and Russia, participating in festivals and special events in venues such as Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan, Berghain in Berlin, the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Bourse de Commerce in Paris, Blank Forms in New York. The legendary composer Eliane Radigue has written a work especially for him, OCCAM XXVI for solo percussion, which he will perform at the event.

EVE ABOULKHEIR (SHAPE+, FR)

Eve Aboulkheir is a French sound artist and composer living in Paris. She studied and graduated from Villa Arson, National Fine Arts School in Nice. Her compositions, installations and performances are focused on creating immersive environments and multi sensorial experiences. Combining electroacoustic manipulations of field recordings and modular synthesis, she deploys ever shifting ambigous, acousmatic landscapes. These chimeric constructions are imbued with the places she explores, proposing new sonic spaces. Her music is released on the GRM Portrait series (INA GRM – Shelter Press) and Kraak records. It has been played at INA GRM acousmonium at Radio France, Maerzmusik festival (Berlin), Sonic Acts (Amsterdam) and more.

BEEPBLIP (SI)

Ida Hiršenfelder (beepblip) is a sound artist and archivist making psychogeographical spatial and ambisonic compositions, sound installations and sound walks. Her work primarily explores sound ecology and spatialisation, addressing themes such as the agency of non-organic others, non-human languages, and listening to the inaudible. She is a member of the Jata C group for bioacoustics and sound ecologies, the Clockwork Voltage community for modular synthesis, and the CENSE Central European Network for Sonic Ecologies. Her solo albums were published by the Kamizdat label. She frequently composes for contemporary dance, for which she received the Golden Lightning Award from Bunker Institute for soundscape in the 2023/24 season.

DUF x LOWLANDER: Voltage crossings (CLOCKWORK VOLTAGE,SI)

Two of the main protagonists of the increasingly prominent Slovenian modular synthesizers community Clockwork Voltage united in a striking duo.

Producer and drummer Jake Berger’s DUF project is a means to exorcise various demons through abrasive ritual sounds. The artist lays his cards on slowly rolling kick drums, noisy textures, saturated frequencies and abstract sonorities in general. Through moody, noisy, bass-centric beat electronics that exist at the intersection of industrial, trip hop, dub and techno, he uses his modulars to build distinctly anxious atmospheres that reflect the current collective unease.

Lowlander, a representative of the harder techno scene, is known for its fierce rhythms and cutting-edge soundscapes, which it builds with its ever-growing range of modular synths. He is known for the raw, rough and distorted textures that build his soundscapes. His productions, released on various prominent labels such as Italo Moderni and trau:ma, have found their way into the DJ sets of techno heavyweights such as Dave the Drummer, Dax J, Richie Hawtin and Perc. His growth as a producer has been greatly helped by the Slovenian community of modular synthesizer enthusiasts Clockwork Voltage.

DodekaOTTO

The DodekaOTTO is a 20-channel sound sculpture based on the OTTOsonics project, which consists of a lightweight aluminum structure in the form of a dodecahedron. This open hardware platform has been designed at the Tangible Music Lab in order to provide a mobile environment for the realization of interactive multichannel installations. Currently there already exist five DodekaOTTO installations at the Tangible Music Lab in Linz, at the Alter Bauhof in Ottensheim, at HEKA in Koper/Slovenia, at the Ionian University at Corfu/Greece and at USJ Macau in China.
