With their unmistakable blend of rock, virtuosity and absurdist humour, the legendary Primus are finally bringing their singular sonic universe to Ljubljana. A band that has always existed gleefully outside the mainstream while leaving a permanent mark on it, whether through hit songs, high-profile collaborations, or unforgettable one-offs like the South Park theme song, Primus promise a night that is as strange, heavy and hilarious as it is musically jaw-dropping.

FOR FANS OF: Mr. Bungle, Butthole Surfers, Queens of the Stone Age …

Formed in the mid-1980s by bassist, vocalist and chief instigator Les Claypool, one of the most revered bassists in history, Primus quickly carved out a sound that defied easy categorisation. Often loosely grouped under alternative metal or funk metal, their music pulls equally from funk, punk, prog rock, psychedelia and experimental rock, stitched together by Claypool’s hyper-distinctive bass playing and surreal storytelling. Slap-bass grooves, jagged guitar riffs and off-kilter rhythms collide in songs that feel deliberately awkward, tightly measured and utterly unique. This combination of technical mastery and lyrical absurdity has become one of the band’s defining traits.

Their major breakthrough came in the MTV 1990s with albums such as Sailing the Seas of Cheese, which introduced wider audiences to their strange, bass-driven universe thanks to hits like “Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” and “My Name Is Mud”. Beyond their core catalogue, Primus have built a reputation for ambitious side projects and collaborations, particularly Les Claypool, who’s worked with everyone from Tom Waits, Stewart Copeland and Henry Rollins to members of Metallica, Tool and the Grateful Dead.

Renowned as a formidable live act, Primus concerts are unpredictable affairs, where existing discography, improvised deviations and a sense of playful menace combine in an unforgettable show. Over the decades, they’ve headlined pretty much every major festival and stage there. Returning to Europe for the first time after almost a decade in summer 2026, they’ll finally pay a visit to Ljubljana, taking over the striking setting of the Križanke Summer Theatre in August. This is not to be missed.
