MIRA LU KOVACS

concert

Austrian musician Mira Lu Kovacs, well known to us as a member of the excellent bands 5K HD, Schmieds Puls and My Ugly Clementine, will present her solo debut, the infinitely wonderful survival album What Else Can Break, accompanied by a backing band. We’ll warm up with the indiemate tunes of young songstress Dora Tomori.

It is pointless to stick genre labels on the work or musical expression of Austrian Mira Lu Kovacs. The common threads of her music are instrumental virtuosity, compositional originality and intimate storytelling, be it with her first trio Schmieds Puls, the pop experiments of 5K HD or the grunge guitars of My Ugly Clementine. Those of you who have already caught one of the bands live know that with her delicate vocals and skilful guitar technique, the award-winning musician simply knows how to touch listeners where all the feels are.

On her solo debut, this is even more prominent. The album What Else Can Break was conceived in her bedroom, in the solitude of the coronavirus lockdown, so it is not surprising that it is suffused with a quiet closeness – as well as with the author’s pain in quarantine times. The record is a musical haven where everyone can feel safe, but it is not a place of fearfulness. On the contrary, it tackles the difficult themes of the post-patriarchal era with courage and sincerity, and uses radical softness as a tool of rebellion. The songs, which found their final shape in collaboration with a stellar lineup of musicians from the vibrant Viennese scene, will be presented live by Kovacs at the end of March.

Despite her youth – or because of it – singer-songwriter Dora Tomori wins you over with her sincere, intimate music in the vein of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker or Lucy Dacus. In her minimalist compositions, she works through the emotions and issues that could be flatly attributed to Generation Z, but actually affect all of us, especially in the present times. Her first release is on the way.
