KEVIN MORBY

+ Macie Stewart

Kevin Morby, one of the key authors of the younger generation of American indie rock, will perform in Slovenia for the first time in June! The musician, who has established himself as a piercing observer and interpreter of modern life, will present last year’s excellent record This Is a Photograph.

Kevin Morby dropped out of school as a teenager and moved to Brooklyn, impressed by the New York City he’d seen in films. Doing odd jobs, he tried to establish himself as a musician. A well-known story, but thanks to Morby’s empathic sense and storytelling skills, it had a happy ending.

After initial successes with the bands Woods and The Babies, Morby set out on his own ten years ago. With the albums Harlem River and Still Life, he began to forge his way to the heights of contemporary American indie rock songwriting. He finally succeeded in breaking through with the excellent Singing Saw, where he combined his previous experience, his characteristically weary, wise voice and musical knowledge into one of the best records of 2016 according to media such as Pitchfork and Mojo.

Singing Saw was followed by the well-received albums City Music, Sundowner and Oh My God, collaborations with partner Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) and world tours, with Morby reaffirming his reputation as one of the most piercing musicians right now. Last year, he released his seventh album, This Is a Photograph, written under the impression of his father’s illness, pandemic conditions and Morby’s retreat to Memphis. The album was released by acclaimed label Dead Oceans, which also counts Phoebe Bridgers, Bright Eyes, Mitski and others among its artists. Morby’s Dylanesque delivery of down-to-earth narratives from life in the central US, presented with the help of an excellent supporting band, has again wowed reviewers. In June, we’ll have the honour of hearing it live as part of Morby’s first visit to Šiška.

A versatile musician and composer from Chicago, Macie Stewart has collaborated with high-profile acts such as SZA, Iron & Wine, Japanese Breakfast, Chance the Rapper and Makaya McCraven, and is also active in the field of free improvisation. Her debut album, Mouth Full of Glass, explores the themes of loneliness and self-discovery in a unique and relatable way, the lush arrangements enveloping her inner meditations, reassessing her relationships, and finding solace and strength in solitude.
