Slovenia’s masters of sample-delic extravaganza return with a brand new release, switching up their eclectic style in a new direction, but, as always, best experienced live and in the flesh.
FOR FANS OF: Gramatik, The Avalanches, DJ Shadow, …
Comprising three seasoned figures from the Slovenian music scene, drummer Marjan Stanić and DJs Borka and Bakto, Jimmy Barka Experience is a rhythmic powerhouse that operates as a cohesive band where each member contributes equally to the sound – it isn’t just some token drumming to spice up a DJ set. Their musical output is an eclectic collage of genres that spans different continents and eras, including funk, Afrobeat, rock, and Balkansploitation, resulting in a dynamic global journey. During their career of more than 15 years, they’ve shared stages with prominent artists like Gramatik and Parov Stelar, delivering wild yet tight performances at prestigious festivals such as Druga Godba, Pohoda, MENT Ljubljana, and the Cully Jazz Festival.
Admittedly, it took them a while to release their first proper studio album – Jusqu’ici Tout Va Bien landed in 2024, following a number of well-received EPs and other bits. They were a bit more rushed with the follow-up, as it arrives a mere two years later. Unlike the previous up-tempo album, rich in organic layers, dancey grooves, and sampled vocals, the new, self-released Not Feeling So Good, takes a completely different direction.. Packed with challenging rhythm patterns, highly improvisational cuts, lots of electronics, and a somewhat murkier, more elusive tone, the album is nonetheless born of the same process: jamming, building grooves, arranging, trying new material out live on stage, then re-arranging, tweaking, scraping, adding … and finally recording. As ever, the palette of samples and references is extremely broad while somewhat more subtle this time around, while the end result is as endlessly fascinating as the interplay between the three musicians itself. Or, in the band’s own words, “a turn in direction before we turn in another direction.”
