The body comes first. A human’s breath, meeting the corporeal, needs neither words nor symbols.
Sun and Iron is a trial – the disciplining of muscles, accustomed to spectacle, into refinement. Gašper Kunšek enters the Cathedral hall of Kino Šiška without excess weight, as ringing iron that may melt in the sun.
If iron is technique, the sun is what burns and lays it bare, so that it can be forged into ever-other forms. As the technique burns away, the body holds back, as if it withdrew the moment you reached for it. And this withdrawal into restraint that transcends is the direction of his search at the edge of the possible. It demands renunciation, silence, and faithfulness to the living.
Each repetition is another state of the same melting. Each stays open – as long as it withstands the gaze of others, to whom it does not offer itself – and reaches into the invisible, into the impossible. And you too, who watch, reach with him.
The muscle, accustomed to being seen, yet trained out of visibility, looks upon the same life – only the body’s starting point is different. That is why he says: “To be and to dance are one and the same.” You enter with no guarantee that it will be comfortable – into a syntax of silence and movement, which opens the doors to a language known to all, gently seething, beyond our words.
