The arrival of spring traditionally brings a new edition of the Fresh Fish commercial exhibition #newcatch to DobraVaga. Wishing to fill our walls with as wide a range of works as possible, we again chose the participating artists through an open call. Works by a broad range of local contemporary visual artists will be on display and for sale, spanning a diverse array of themes, media and formats.
In this year’s selection, despite a few departures, a common thread emerges through motifs of the everyday and its associated, seemingly banal objects. The participating artists approach these items in diverse ways. Some portray them through the prism of internet culture, collaging and reinterpreting meme references, often on canvas. Others simply document them through their own gaze and capture, stripping them of their everyday context. In addition, a series of natural images is established in which human presence is merely a trace; where no such trace is visible, the image becomes detached, almost supernatural. Conversely, the artist’s hand is palpable in several graphic works that abstract daily scenes through the use of intense textures, rendering them nearly grotesque. Ultimately, however, many of the pieces take a humorous turn.
