FOTO VIST 2015: Techniques and Procedures

An all-day series of events will be exploring the medium of photography, which is part of our ordinary world – both as trivial images and a habit that is there to stay. We have noticed an abundance of photographs. It is often said for photography to be omnipresent, but this is not getting us anywhere.

An all-day series of events will be exploring the medium of photography, which is part of our ordinary world – both as trivial images and a habit that is there to stay. We have noticed an abundance of photographs. It is often said for photography to be omnipresent, but this is not getting us anywhere. There is an abundance of words as well and when we speak of language being omnipresent, we are aiming at its being present where we fail to perceive it: where it has gotten under our skins, controlling the activity of bodies and events. And if language is also present under the skin of photography, it most certainly pertains to more than just discussing photography, more even than the utterly boring competition in the sense of “a picture is worth a thousand words”. It is because of this that the series of events will be highlighting what it is that makes a photo work: techniques and procedures. It is about solutions, arrangements, measures, statements, claims, laws and institutions organising themselves into networks to address certain needs – to turn a photo into an appliance in all senses of the word.

The first set of events will comprise workshops for the general and expert public, and the second set will comprise lectures and discussions. At the same time, there will be exhibitions, books to be browsed, and night screenings allowing people to dance.
