One of the most unique and influential music project of the past 20 years, American sisterly duo CocoRosie, is finally coming back to Ljubljana – and with a brand-new album in tow.

Put on any CocoRosie record, from their 2004 debut La Maison de Mon Rêve to last year’s Little Death Wishes, and a few things quickly become clear. For one, the founding Casady sisters possess a seemingly inexhaustible font of inspiration and creative influences, with everything from classical opera and freak folk to hip-hop and electronic music finding its way into their wholly idiosyncratic sound. Secondly, though a childlike sense of wonder permeates the music, amplified by the use of toy instruments and Bianca Casady’s characteristically whimsical vocal delivery, the lyrical themes are unafraid of tackling the heavy stuff, from intimate tragedies and personal trauma to a radical feminist outlook, taboos, social issues, and more. The resulting body of work has established CocoRosie as one of the most original and influential artists of the 2000s, widely beloved, often misunderstood, but always unwavering in their pursuit of artistic self-realization.
Having built up a devoted global fanbase over two decades of sold-out concerts and a number of acclaimed albums, CocoRosie released their highly anticipated eighth studio album Little Death Wishes last year. A tender-hearted and expansive exploration of generational hardship and the delicate nature of the human experience, the album distils the duo’s artistic essence by transforming personal pain and cultural clichés into profound, fresh truths. Operating within its own unique musical lexicon, the record blends primordial sounds with pop culture to create a theatrical, baroque atmosphere that works particularly well live, given the multidisciplinary sisters’ penchant for elaborate stagecraft. And with their previous visits to Ljubljana still firmly entrenched in local gig goers’ memories, we’re eagerly looking forward to experiencing the latest iteration of this long-running, reliably excellent music and art project as CocoRosie finally return this June.
