Winston Rodney aka Burning Spear is a foundational figure in reggae music. Set on his decades spanning career by none other than Bob Marley, Rodney visited the acclaimed Studio One label on Marley’s recommendation and recorded his first two seminal albums in the late 1960s. Later on, his sound evolved further by integrating jazz, funk, and rock elements into a solid roots reggae foundation, broadening his audience, spreading reggae love, and solidifying his status as a global music force on a number of critically acclaimed releases.
Now in his early 80s, the venerated artist has hardly slowed down, releasing the latest of his 28 and counting studio albums in 2023. Over the years, his immense contribution has been recognised with an impressive twelve Grammy nominations and two wins for Best Reggae Album, while the Jamaican government honoured his dedication to the arts by awarding him the Order of Distinction. In addition to his music career, he remains a dedicated anti-racism activist and philanthropist, having been involved in various social and political causes throughout his career, including the fight against apartheid in South Africa and the struggle for independence in Zimbabwe.
Burning Spear’s vocal delivery remains as powerful and identifiable as ever, carrying a message that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, from festival fields under the open sky to intimate club venues like our own.
