ASKE THIBERG: iiiiiiiii

curatorial cycle XXIII (until 31. 12.)

Aske Thiberg shuffles between various media in his work, ranging from animation and writing to performance, evolving in close interdependence with dance and music. He focuses on the world of an individual who is pathologically oriented toward the mechanisms of their own alienation, presenting themselves as inaccessible and incomprehensible to the rest of society.

Minimalist compositions and choreographies arise from the transformation of mundane objects into ready-mades that Thiberg uses to outline various events. In the current exhibition, we follow a blend of objects and situations, where their usual role is subjected to peculiar manipulations. A runner moving sideways on an empty running track, wooden matches stacking upon each other without any resistance, a carpet embracing the interior of an airplane. All these elements appear trapped in repetitive rhythms, moving between the constraints and advantages of the media with which the artist operates. Interactions between the elements used in the works begin to unveil the interplay of relationships on the micro and macro levels; of how the body relates to movement, movement to rhythm, rhythm to sound, the artist to the audience, and the event to the external world.

The choreographies seem to be caught in the vicious circle of a cause-and-effect relationship, but the origin of the relationship’s dynamics and the used object remains unclear. The exhibition titled “iiiiiiiii” is presented as both a consequence and a cause, offering insight into a fragment of events that look to belong to some kind of automated machinery. Thiberg’s work navigates the complex terrain of various relationships, where ongoing repetition becomes a vessel for interpretation. The detached attitude toward the used objects maintains a certain ambiguity, encouraging the viewer to clarify the relationships the objects are a part of.

Aske Thiberg lives and works in Copenhagen and Stockholm. He is a recent graduate from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He has exhibited at institutions including Kunsthal Charlottenborg (2023), Malmö Kunstmuseum (2022), Den Frie Udstillingsbygning (2022), Kunsthal Oslo (2021), and Udstillingsstedet Sydhavn Station (2020 & 2022).
