ARTIST PER MONTH | David Kucler: Wall Clocks

exhibition

In his work, David Kucler focuses on various technical approaches, and at the same time often directs his attention towards folk – frequently also playful – motifs when it comes to content, layering, juxtaposing and placing them in contemporary contexts.

His present exhibition features the triptych Wall Clocks, in which the relationships between the individual paintings are not developed on the basis of narrative continuity, but through the substantive connections and juxtapositions of folk motifs or objects that artist sought in monographs and catalogues. At the same time, the series refers to the striving for as objective a representation of such motifs as possible – in catalogues, they are often placed on stands or pedestals –, which exists in contrast to the marked subjectivity or intimacy of handicrafts.

David Kucler (1994, Ljubljana) works in the fields of painting and graphics. In 2021, he graduated in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design with a series of blueprints and silkscreen prints titled Unknown Photographer. He is currently continuing his master’s studies at the same Academy (upon graduation, he received the Academy’s Award for Special Artistic Achievements). In 2019, David Kucler’s drawings were published in the international magazine Txt: The Art of Reading, and his works have so far been displayed in the group exhibitions Heritage (2022) at the DobraVaga Gallery and Prints and Impressions 2 (2022) at the International Centre of Graphic Arts.
