A marathon of talks with directors, critics and theoreticians from the early 1990s.

Moderated by participants of GILŠ – KODUM theatre and puppet school (1991–1999).

“Not only have the achievements of the historical avant-garde demanded new topics, but also for a brand new world to be imagined, different from the empirical world, a world with own language, gesture, images as well as own attitude towards the body, the principle of time, spatial arrangement, architecture, design and use of objects.”

(Bonnie Marranca: The Theatre of Images, New York, 1995; excerpt from Bonnie Marranca’s preface to the reprint of her book, which, translated by Tomaž Toporišič, was published as part of his treatise “Gledališče podob, postdramsko gledališče, pozni socializem in postsocializem” in the exhibition catalogue Razširjeni prostori umetnosti 1985 – 1995, Moderna galerija, 2004)

The early 1990s saw a massive influx of new theatre and dance aesthetics. Betontanc, Iztok Kovač with En-Knap, Tomaž Štrucl, Matjaž Berger, Iztok Lovrič, Marko Peljhan, Ema Kugler, Barbara Novakovič and many other artists brought a major upheaval to the then theatre scene and changed the image of theatre for good.

The marathon of talks will match thirteen directors and thirteen critics, each couple discussing chosen performances from the early 1990s. Each event will feature the director of the chosen performance, the critic who reviewed it, and a host.

The following will be facing each other in the Komuna Hall: Matjaž Berger, Mateja Bučar, Matjaž Farič, Janez Janša, Marko Košnik, Ema Kugler, Iztok Lovrič, Barbara Novakovič, Marko Peljhan, Matjaž Pograjc, Vlado G. Repnik, Tomaž Štrucl, Branko Završan and Eda Čufer, Simon Kardum, Bojana Kunst, Ženja Leiler, Tanja Lesničar-Pučko, Blaž Lukan, Aldo Milohnić, Jana Pavlič, Irena Štaudohar and Tomaž Toporišič.

Hosts: Irena Duša Draž, Jedrt Jež Furlan, Amelia Kraigher, Marko Mandić, Katarina Stegnar and Rok Vevar.

Discussions will be supported with photographs and videos from performances as well as interviews with the artists who contributed to the shows significantly. The marathon is an excellent opportunity for the dispersed generation of artists to socialise, and for a reflection on an extremely important period in Slovenian culture and art.
