A decade on from her debut performance in Šiška, revered Swedish musician and composer Anna von Hausswolff is finally returning to Ljubljana, her status as an artist of unpredictable, vast creativity firmly established.
Known for infusing ancient traditions with bold experimentation, last year’s ICONOCLASTS is one of her most accomplished records yet and made the annual best-of charts at numerous referential media.
FOR FANS OF: Diamanda Galás, Lingua Ignota, Nick Cave …
At the heart of von Hausswolff’s sound is the pipe organ, an instrument she utilises for its ancient character as much as its ability to mimic the ethereal qualities of human breath. Shifting seamlessly between colossal, doom-laden rock and intimate organ pieces, her carefully sculpted sonic landscapes instil a sense of gargantuan scale and intensity while retaining a deeply personal connection. Highly respected among her peers, von Hausswolff’s career has seen her collaborate with artists such as Swans, Sunn O))), and Wolves in the Throne Room, perform at acclaimed festivals such as Montreaux Jazz, Roadburn, and Haldern Pop, and release six studio albums.
On her latest record, ICONOCLASTS, finds her evolving her sound yet again by introducing more vibrant elements to her stirring anthemic ritualism. This new chapter, built around the concept of shattering and reimagining sacred symbols of contemporary life such as commitment, time, and belief, resonated with a number of renowned guest musicians, including Iggy Pop and Ethel Cain. Music critics also heaped praise on the album – it beat out the likes of Rosalía and Geese for Album of the Year at The Line of Best Fit, while also making the annual best-of lists at The Guardian, The Quietus, and others.
Whether drawing inspiration from the weight of Atlas or the pursuit of the divine, von Hausswolff’s voice is a uniquely magnetic force that pulls the listener in, delicately guiding them through the dramatic world the artist has shaped over the years. This is the invitation to visit it you’ve been waiting for.
