5A PUNKADA

concert + movie

5a Punkada, an inspiring Portuguese blues rock band whose members have overcome cerebral palsy and other disabilities to follow their musical dreams, are coming to Šiška in autumn. Ahead of the gig, we’ll watch a short documentary about the band.

FOR FANS OF: The Rolling Stones, The Screaming Wheels, Stray Train …

5a Punkada is a unique band – a band of musicians born with cerebral palsy or other mental or physical disabilities, who nonetheless refuse to accept that their native limitations can stop their dreams. Over almost three decades as a band, they’ve racked up more than 300 gigs, including sharing the stage with Coldplay in front of 50,000 people, overcome line-up changes due to health issues, released an album, toured their native Portugal and further afield, performing at major festivals, and released a documentary highlighting travel, work, and music when you’re different and have certain needs when it comes to mobility and support.

Born in the 1990s, the amazing Portuguese band has roots in the heydays of contemporary rock and a very punk attitude when it comes restrictions, but leans into bluesy melodies in its music. 5a Punkada’s concerts are a celebration of human love and dignity, emotional affairs inspire audiences towards becoming better, more empathetic human beings. Join them for an unforgettable musical night at Šiška this September.

The short documentary Are We Punks or Not? (2021) covers the recording of the band’s debut album in the company of punk rocker Vitor Torpedo, one-woman band Surma and indie producer Rui Gaspar, and a concert tour in Portugal. It’s not about music therapy, it’s not about social inclusion, it’s about real participation, it’s about the love of music, willpower, and a real band that needs to work harder to overtake all the barriers they face. Aren’t they punk?
