The Bongo Club know what it’s all about. Likeable guitar melodies, clever lyrics about the trials and tribulations of the younger generations, and cheerful rhythms are the recipe for the indie rock craze that swept the world at the turn of the millennium. The Swedes draw on this sound, sprucing it up for the here and now, and they do that so well they even won over the producer who worked on the best-known Oasis albums. Not bad for a band that’s all of three years old! The home colours at the evening will be represented by the current champions of our Špil liga high school band league, the shagadelic rock youths Joker Out.

The eldest son of Afrobeat and musical revolutionary Fela Kuti is returning with his new album One People One World, released in February. He’s bringing along his positive concert force, which reaffirms the noble Afrobeat tradition, modernizes and intertwines its sound with reggae, soul and hip-hop elements, and instils the social engagement with mature optimism.

The idiosyncratic musical visionary and the godfather of nostalgically leisurely lo-fi retro pop, the unmistakable sound of the 21st century, Ariel Pink is coming to Slovenia for the first time! He’ll take us into his appealing oddball world with the help of his September album, declared by critics to be one of the most impressive indie rock releases of the decade and one of Pink’s best albums ever.

After a convincing performance at the first MENT Ljubljana festival in 2015, one of the most successful Baltic bands, Carnival Youth, is coming back. In the intervening time, the indie rock trio released the excellent record Propeller, nabbing the Latvian awards for Album of the Year and Best Indie Album, joined artists such as Milky Chance, Anna Calvi, Damien Rice and Dua Lipa on the list of recipients of the prestigious EBBA award, and started working on new material. To warm us up, the winners of the third season of our Špil liga high school band league, Infected, will give us a shot of their contagious alternative rock.

The former member of Icelandic group GusGus, the frontman of indie folkers Hjaltalín, composer and singer Högni will visit us in April with his solo debut. On it, the newest addition to the Erased Tapes roster faced down the conflicting aspects of his personality, with his intriguing art pop drawing comparisons to Björk, ANOHNI, Perfume Genius and Four Tet.

After more than 15 years, one of the key names of the Tucson Americana or desert indie rock scene, Calexico, is finally coming back to Slovenia! The band, established by the former members of Giant Sand, will play at Šiška for the first time, presenting the exciting sound of their new album The Thread That Keeps Us. The record was released via Anti-Records and City Slang this year, immediately setting a whole new standard for the band.

Kino Šiška and the Sezam crew are calling an allnighter, headed by producer Dan Snaith, who previously got us moving as Caribou and Manitoba. He will visit Ljubljana for the first time as his DJ alter-ego Daphni, who’s brought the beats to the most famed clubs and festivals around the whole world. The evening will be introduced and outroduced by YGT, Dacho and Levanael. Now that’s the way to start the autumn!

After an exhilarating first visit in 2014, the GrandMothers of Invention, the only alumni of the legendary Frank Zappa and his band The Mothers of invention who have constantly played the maestro’s music since 2003, are returning to Šiška as part of their farewell tour. Don’t miss your chance to see them live one last time!

The former Sub Pop roster outliers, the crazy garage punk cowboys Supersuckers, worshipped among others by Lemmy Kilmister himself, Eddie Vedder, Cheap Trick, Willie Nelson and Little Steven, are returning to Ljubljana in April. Warming us up for the explosive rock ‘n’ roll party will be local psychobilly veterans EightBomb. Hit it!

We’ll head to Metelkova in the company of the legendary Motorpsycho, who have been cruising the rock psychoverse for two decades, infusing it with prog, jazz, noise and whatever other kind of element they think off. The four-time winners of the esteemed Norwegian “Grammy”, the Spellemannprisen award, who have collaborated with Steve Albini and Jaga Jazzist, were rejuvenated two years ago by a new drummer, who also plays in Zu. Together, they created last year’s hearty double album The Tower for the influential Rune Grammofon label, with the recording process also taking place at the famed Rancho De La Luna studio.
