Delo Prehod je vedno odprt. avtorja Matjaža Komela odpira prostor, v katerem se prepletajo fantazijski svetovi, mitološke podobe, imaginarij sodobne popularne kulture, ezoterika in zahodni okultizem.
Matjaž Komel’s work The Gate Is Always Open. opens up a space where fantasy worlds, mythological imagery, the imaginarium of contemporary popular culture, esotericism, and Western occultism intertwine.
The composition is inhabited by fantastical, mystical creatures: a cat-dragon, a monumental multi-limbed celestial entity, (feline) angelic figures, and other fantastic beings that appear as guardians, companions, or inhabitants of this unusual, mysterious, and thrilling universe. Their bodies give the impression of being in a state of constant transformation – stretching, intertwining, and merging into one another.
The Gate in the title can be understood as a metaphysical portal into fantastic worlds beyond everyday reality, as well as passage between different states, identities, and ways of perceiving (and seeing). The work establishes a unique visual language that offers no single, fixed meaning; instead, it functions as an open system of symbols where meaning shifts depending on the viewer’s perspective. The viewer is free to enter and exit the artist’s imaginary world at will. Because the gate is always open in both directions, the portal – and with it, its meaning – is never permanently closed or finalized. Its fluidity suggests that, much like identity, meaning is not fixed, but rather an ongoing process of transition (between the known and the unknown), transformation, and reshaping. Ultimately, the work does not answer what lies beyond the door, but rather invites us to understand it as an open space of continuous becoming.
Matjaž Komel graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, majoring in visual communications. He works in the field of visual communications and as part of the art and design duo Lealudvik (together with Lea Jelenko), which is active in the fields of visual art, graphic design, and zine production. Since 2018, he has regularly worked with the Centre for Urban Culture Kino Šiška as an external contributor, serving as the creative director of visual materials.
