Early visions of interconnected knowledge networks that gather and make sense of streams of messy data have materialised in an extractive and operationalised World Wide Web. Running on data-hungry infrastructures geared toward large-scale machinic processing, our actions within the seamless interfaces of online platforms and applications are rendered into data points within systems of classification, optimisation and monetisation.

In our endless scrolling though the labyrinthine strata of AI slop, bot operations, tracking cookies and algorithmic recommendations – as a means of coping in the face of dwindling resources and the bleakness of the future on the horizon – communities are fragmenting into disempowered and alienated individuals, while creativity becomes merely a tool in the endless feedback loops of production and consumption, speculation and the consolidation of power.

Adela calls on bodies from the “always on” dark forest to join us “offline” and engage with rogue, open-source algorithms, wild, grassroots web experiments and communities that nurture creativity within limitations. By exploring the potential of low-tech, slow, obsolete, overlooked and small technologies, we will uncover the social, creative and infrastructural protocols for community computing and sustainable networking.
