A devoted musician from a young age, Nate Smith’s ascent to the forefront of the international scene began with pivotal roles alongside legends like Dave Holland and Chris Potter, but his versatility has since made him a first-call collaborator for a staggering array of titans. Over the years, he has toured and recorded with artists as diverse as Pat Metheny, Norah Jones, Childish Gambino, Brittany Howard, and Ravi Coltrane. His influence stretches from the jazz elite to the pop and funk worlds, seen in his work with Jon Batiste, Van Hunt, Lauren Daigle, and Kurt Elling, as well as his membership in the funk powerhouses Vulfpeck and The Fearless Flyers. This broad appeal even led him to provide the backbeat for the Late Night with Seth Meyers house band and graced him with a cover feature in Modern Drummer magazine.
Beyond the stage, Smith has also emerged as a new kind of musical influencer. Through a series of viral videos, he has become a popular educator who makes complex rhythmic principles accessible to millions, which found a permanent home on his Pocket Change releases.
Smith will be bringing his legendary “deep pocket” – that infectious, physical feeling that compels the listener to move – to Ljubljana the year after winning two Grammy awards, including Best Alternative Jazz Album, for his collaborative project LIVE-ACTION, where he put his creative relationships to good use. Armed with a discography that challenges the boundaries of genre and a live show that serves as a masterclass in groove, precision, and soul-stirring intensity, we can look forward to an unforgettable Šiška debut from one of the most influential drummers of his generation.
