Les Négresses Vertes is a French band that was created in 1987 in Paris. Their beginning is closely linked to the punk subculture and street art from which it came. Even their name was chosen as a provocation and a challenge of the then social norms, showing the rebellious spirit and the desire to transcend borders. They have created a musically completely unique style in which rock, punk, chanson, Latin rhythms, reggae, and Gypsy music are combined. This vibrant mix of styles, backed by energetic performances, quickly brought them the reputation of one of the most innovative bands of the French music scene in the late 1980s.
The first album, Mest (1988), was a great success, especially because of the songs that combined humor, political engagement, and contagious energy. Followed by Famille Nombreuse (1991) and Zig-Zague (1992), which have consolidated the position of the group both at home and abroad. Their musical expression was always imbued with a sense of social topics, as well as with irony and playfulness, which helped them to address a very diverse audience. After the sudden death of the charismatic singer Heln in 1993, the future of the band was uncertain, but the members kept going and began to flirt with electronic music and more modern production techniques.
In the following years, they developed a sound that kept the basic exotic styling mix while at the same time adapting new trends. Their songs have become synonymous with musical boldness, openness and joy of life. Les Négresses Vertes today are considered a cult group, which, with its innovative approach, significantly marked French and European music history.
